Luckie Tech develops a device that revolutionizes cancer patient monitoring

Luckie Tech was literally created from the dream of the engineer Joel de Oliveira Jr. After experiencing the cancer of his own son, Lucas, he decided he needed to contribute and help others facing the same challenge. In partnership with William Sousa, president of the Kainos Artificial Intelligence group, he created a device that monitors the temperature and four other vital signs of patients.

Connected to the AWS cloud, the accessory makes real-time data available to the medical staff and patient caregivers, improving monitoring and speeding up care, which consequently decreases the mortality rate. In this scenario of innovation, Compass UOL was another partner that joined this project to add value with all its knowledge of AWS solutions.

02
The challenge

There are several challenges, and we can mention some of them, such as:

- The Luckie Tech team is small and has limited cloud technical knowledge.

- Environment and data security are essential to maintain its credibility and image.

- The reliability and stability of the application directly affect the quality of life of patients.

- For being highly focused on a noble social cause, the children in oncological treatment, the cost management needs to be very well structured and shouldn't affect the investments directly linked to patients.

03
The solution

We dedicated our efforts to analyzing the existing environments and, by using Well-Architected best practices, we could determine the infrastructure needs, the processes they should improve, and the priority actions for vulnerability remediation and security enhancement, improving event monitoring, and designing the best strategy for cost management.

We used technologies ranging from the use of Cognito (as an authentication service), API Gateway (for creating APIS), RDS (as a relational database), and Lambdas functions (which are written in Python and are an important point because they concentrate all the business logic of the application).

We carried out the API development, database modeling assistance, configuration, and further development of the authentication system, besides contributing to the front-end implementation of the solution together with Kainos.

We started adding other AWS services, such as Amazon QuickSight, S3, and Amazon Athena. The management of the operation and project remains in constant evolution, and our next goal is to create an Artificial Intelligence that processes all the data collected and creates insights that help improve the quality of life of patients, as well as reduce the mortality rate of children.

Main results

Luckie Tech started to have governance and financial management of the cloud, and the integration and communication between its teams and the Compass UOL teams made up for the technician shortage and the need for attention in the administration of the IT environment. Thus, it was possible to focus on strategic planning for patient care and system evolution.

Today, Luckie Tech can show the whole solution to hospitals and health plans, being ready to start the Clinical Study process, which is necessary for Healthtechs of high complexity.
